到達淡水
Arrival at Tamsui,
禮拜六 9日
約下午3點，船入淡水港並且下錨。被這個地方深深的感動，我立即下定決心，這就是一直在等待我的宣教區（field）。在我之前沒有人在此地服事。噢！值得讚美的上帝阿！我的心裡歡愉直到感覺真想高興的拍手。美麗的淡水，我的心裡實在感動。一位陶德（John Dodd）先生非常善意的借給我們他所能提供最好的客房，當然是很少使用且較偏僻的房間。但是我們心中有多感激只有上帝知曉。
Sat. 9th
April 3. p.m. entered the Tamsui harbor and dropped anchor. greatly taken with the place. At once my mind made up, this is the very field waiting for me, no other laborer ever before me. O blessed Lord I rejoice till feeling like clapping my hands in joy. Beautiful Tamsui, I am so impressed!
A Mr John Dodd kindly gave us the best quarters he could. Of course only an out of the way room which was seldom occupied; but how thankful we were God knows ......

清早起床，整理行李後搭小船渡過對岸，沿著山腳伸向海邊的階地前行。在10點到達階地終點，接著我們登上臺地。以竹林圍著的農舍散佈四處，草地開著美麗紫色的小花（紫羅蘭），形成此地主要的景觀。見不到稻田。這讓我們充滿著愉快和輕鬆的心情，我們也期待在未來數天的旅程中有相同的景象；但是到了下午，我們走入平原，通過許多條來自於山中流動清澈的溪水。下午5點我們來到一個名為中壢的小鎮。
Mon. 11.
arose early, packed up and crossed the harbor in a small boat, then proceeded along a level stretch of land lying between the base of the mountain and the sea. about 10 a.m. we came to the end of that and ascended a table-land. farm houses scattered all over with bamboo trees around them and the grass spangled with pretty purple flowers (violets) formed the chief characteristics. No rice fields could be seen. It made me all so cheerful and buoyant in spirits that one could have wished it would be the same for days travelling; but in the afternoon we descended into a plain and crossed by a few running fresh streams of water which rose among the mountains in the interior amongst the mountains about 5 p.m. we entered a town called Tiong-li.
